8 years tube light-painting anniversary 💕
1- Eight years already??
It’s hard to believe! At the end of July 2015, we randomly stumbled on these plastic tubes which would then change our lives:
Thousands of pictures later, we’re more excited than ever to improve the technique, create better images, and find more efficient ways to make the technique available to our artist friends. We’re currently building more cohesive series of 9 images for upcoming galleries (see NightReflection.com).
To celebrate the 8th year anniversary, we asked the community to show us a picture from their first session (and to indicate the year!), as well as one from their latest session. For us, it’s July 2015 in California and July 2023 in Atacama:
I was amazed by all the submissions we received. The progression is quite astonishing. But the one story that struck me is the one from my friend Servando Morales :
7/22/2017 Was my first attempt at light painting. Little did I know that this would become an important photo to my family three years later as my dad would pass in 2020. We visited Padre Island National Sea Shore to see the release of turtle hatchlings. I brought my gear and my new clear tube and flashlight. This was totally experimental as I had not practiced this technique at all. With some instruction to stay still my father's silhouette came out sharp. I took a few more photos with my daughter and then the sun came up and it was time to move on for the day.
2017 to 2023: There has been a lot of growth with this technique over the last six years. Watching every video that Eric Pare and Kim Henry would post was a big inspiration. I could not wait until the new "Tube Stories" would be posted. Being recognized and being asked to participate in Eric Pare online events is an honor. Over the years I have completed over 50 light painting sessions and each one has its own challenges. Learning how to adapt to each challenge allows you to grow for the next session. This has been a great journey and I plan to continue learning and trying new techniques.
7/22/2023 was my latest light painting session. I invited my friend @paula11alvarado who has collaborated with me on a few sessions. We headed to a tunnel in North Texas and had a great session. She understands the technique and takes direction well. It wasn't until after the sessions completed I was sitting in my car that a FB Memory popped up from 7/22/17. It was the photo of my father, which happened to be my first light painting session, six years earlier. I felt a connection with my dad and knew that he would be proud to know that I continue to create art.
